Abstract

The Brazilian National Curriculum Guidelines for Engineering programs emphasize competency-based education, the integration of theory and practice, humanistic training, and student autonomy. In this context, traditional linear and content-centered curricula have proven insufficient to meet contemporary demands in engineering education. This article analyzes the implementation of a spiral curriculum design in a Civil Engineering program at a private Brazilian higher education institution, grounded in formative intentionality and the progressive articulation between theory and practice. Methodologically, this is a qualitative and applied case study based on documentary analysis of the Course Pedagogical Project, curriculum structure, national guidelines, institutional documents, and external assessments such as ENADE. The results indicate that spiral curriculum organization promotes progressive revisiting of core concepts, integration among teaching, research, and extension, and the development of competencies required by national guidelines and external evaluations. The study concludes that spiral curriculum design is a viable and replicable strategy for pedagogical innovation in Civil Engineering education.
