CONSTRUCTION OF A DIDACTIC BENCH FOR THE STUDY OF THE CHARACTERISTIC CURVE OF A CENTRIFUGAL PUMP

Centrifugal pumps are widely used in various residential and industrial applications. Understanding their operating characteristics experimentally is important for an engineer's training. The objective of this work was to construct a didactic test bench for studying the characteristic curve of a centrifugal pump. Initially, the hydraulic system layout was defined; then, the materials were selected and, finally, the test bench was assembled, composed of the following components: reservoir, centrifugal pump, suction and discharge piping, accessories, and pressure and flow measurement instruments. The test bench was validated by constructing the pump's characteristic curve. Tests were performed at three rotor speeds to validate the similarity concepts. Three Q x H rising characteristic curves were obtained for rotor speeds of 913, 2765, and 8680 rpm. It was observed that as mechanical energy increases, the fluid receives more pressure energy. It can be concluded that a didactic bench can be constructed to study the characteristic curve of a centrifugal pump and validate theoretical concepts.
